Bringing a boiler line to Quebec

Quebec heats mostly with electricity, oversees pressure installations and gas through the RBQ, and expects product information, manuals and business websites in French. It needs its own plan, started early.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Quebec is the province where a boiler launch most needs its own plan. Seven Quebec homes in ten heat mainly with electricity, and gas (5%) and wood (4%) trail far behind in the 2023 figures from Statistics Canada. Pressure installations and gas fall under the RBQ, and French-language obligations reach your product documents, catalogues and website. Start this work at least one launch wave ahead.

The Quebec market and its buyers

Demand centres on Greater Montréal (Montréal, Laval, Longueuil) and Québec City with Lévis, with Gatineau, Sherbrooke and Saguenay as other key markets.

  • Older multi-unit buildings in Montréal and Québec City, where hydronic systems are common and replacements run through mechanical contractors.
  • Electrically heated homes, where electric boilers can fit homes with hydronic distribution, and where heat pumps are heavily promoted.
  • Commercial and institutional buildings, typically reached through rep agencies, specifiers and mechanical firms.
  • Gas customers, a small share of households, concentrated in areas with gas service.

Gatineau contractors often also work in Ottawa, so your Quebec and Ontario plans should coordinate.

Climate and seasonality

Away from the St. Lawrence valley, snow and cold keep heating systems working well into spring. Replacement demand peaks with the cold, and planned commercial work clusters in the warmer months. French-language campaigns should be planned on the same calendar as English ones elsewhere, not translated afterwards.

The authorities to know

The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) covers pressure installations. Its section lists obligations by role. For manufacturers, these include registering designs, having equipment inspected during manufacturing, filing a declaration of conformity and qualifying welders, and it notes that manufacturers outside Canada must register with ASME and the National Board. It also reported an amending regulation published on July 15, 2026. The RBQ's gas section covers gas installations under the construction and safety codes and lists CSA B149.1 as the installation code for natural gas and propane.

French-language requirements

The OQLF's page on trademarks on products says information on a product, its packaging and accompanying documents, including instructions and warranty certificates, must be in French, with any other language no more prominent. Since June 1, 2025, generic and descriptive terms must also appear in French, while a recognized trademark can remain in another language. The OQLF's page on products, information and services in French lists catalogues, brochures, business websites and customer service among the items consumers can expect in French.

For a boiler brand, that touches manuals, warranty cards, spec sheets, packaging, your website, your dealer locator and every dealer marketing asset. Our Quebec French readiness service builds the inventory.

Programs relevant to a boiler brand

As of October 2026, Hydro-Québec's LogisVert residential page lists grants for heat pumps, geothermal systems and electric thermal storage, and no grant for boilers. Do not imply one. If your range includes products that work alongside heat pumps or thermal storage, explain the fit clearly to dealers.

What Quebec dealers will judge you on

Quebec installers judge a new brand quickly on three things: whether the manuals and labels are in proper French, whether a French-speaking technical line answers when something goes wrong, and whether the brand's marketing reads as if it was written for Quebec. Getting all three right before launch is the single biggest factor we see in early Quebec sell-through.

How we would approach Quebec

  1. Start French documents a wave early, beginning with manuals and warranty certificates.
  2. Choose a partner with Quebec branches and French-speaking technical support.
  3. Build French-first marketing from the terms Quebec contractors and owners actually use.
  4. Coordinate Gatineau with Ottawa to avoid conflicting messages.
